About Us

The Hands Up Foundation is a young and innovative charity that was set up by four British friends: Rose Lukas, Louisa and Johnny Barnett, and reportage illustrator, George Butler. Inspired by their time in Damascus, they want to remind friends in Syria that they have not been forgotten.

Hands Up funds health and education programmes in Syria and neighbouring countries. Our aim is to make a positive difference to Syrians in need. We work directly with local organisations who know the needs and context of their local communities better than anyone. Our work is simple, positive, and transparent; gather people together, remind them of Syria’s rich culture and do something good.

Hands Up runs several high-profile fundraising initiatives including Cinema for Syria, MarmalAid, Singing for Syrians and Syrian Supper Club. These campaigns enable us to fund aid projects in and around Syria, including paying doctor’s salaries at a Primary Health Clinic in north-east Syria and teaching for 300 Syrian refugee children in the Bekaa Valley, Lebanon.
